PATNA: In the wake of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Bihar police have tightened security around major tourist spots ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the state.
This will be the PM’s first visit to election-bound Bihar after the Pahalgam incident, prompting the state to enhance security measures. The Prime Minister is expected to announce actions against the terror group behind the attack, which claimed the lives of innocent tourists.
During his visit, the PM is scheduled to attend a function in Patna where he will launch development projects and flag off new trains. He will then address a rally in Jhanjharpur, Madhubani district, on the occasion of Panchayati Raj Diwas.
Bihar DGP Vinay Kumar said on Wednesday that an alert has been issued across the state following the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir. Security has been stepped up in districts along the Indo-Nepal border, at airports, and near tourist destinations.
After a review meeting with top police officials, the DGP said intelligence units have also been directed to monitor people entering India from Nepal. Border police outposts along the Indo-Nepal border have been put on high alert to monitor cross-border movement.
Sources at the state police headquarters said that since Madhubani shares a border with Nepal, there is concern that terrorists might try to use the porous border to enter India.
Security has been tightened at key tourist destinations including Bodh Gaya, Rajgir, Vaishali, Takht Shri Harimandir Sahib (Patna Sahib), and the Hanuman temple near Patna Junction.
Officials of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), which guards the Indo-Nepal border, have also met with their Nepalese counterparts to prevent any possible plans by terror groups or cross-border gangs.
The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has issued an advisory to the Bihar government regarding the PM’s visit to Madhubani on April 24. As a result of the Pahalgam attack, the PMO has restricted felicitation events during his one-day visit to Bihar. It is also learned that the Prime Minister has cancelled his scheduled visit to Kanpur.
